about Beating Hearts

My husband broke my nose when I was pregnant. He really wasn't ready to have a child. He didn't want the responsibility. When my stomach got big and I could feel the baby kicking, I'd say, "Look! isn't it wonderful?" He'd look disgusted and say, "You look like a whale."

He hated my getting bigger, and sometimes he wouldn't let me eat. I felt like he was starving me.

One night when he was playing basketball and I was home alone, someone knocked on the door. It was my husband's boss and his wife, and they had a big ice cream cone in their hands. They just thought a pregnant woman might like a treat like that.

I will never forget that kindness, as long as I live.
